Ultimate Prepper Toolbox Part 1: The Prepper Toolbox Library
The Prepper toolbox is a topic that I have not seen covered by preppers. Tools are almost never discussed in the prepper community (other than here on 3BY). Even though the topic has been briefly discussed, a comprehensive list of tools preppers need has not been discussed here (or anywhere else for that matter).
Tradesmen can skip to Part 5 of the list where I discuss tools that most of us don’t need unless SHTF. Preppers take special note. If there is something on this list that you don’t have, delay purchasing the tacticool flashlight and put these items on your shopping list.
Salty inspired me to write this article because of some of his projects at The Place and he wasn’t entirely comfortable with some of the tasks. The thought occurred to me that some people (such as apartment dwellers) might not actually have a good or complete set of tools. Also, it takes a lot of doing stuff to know what you REALLY need. Also, tools can be EXTREMELY expensive, and I can help guide you to not waste money.
Note: I have received NO compensation from any retailer or manufacturer of any of the products you read about. These products were purchased and used by me over time – unless otherwise noted. Some of the items I recommend are what I would purchase if I didn’t already have the item and it is stated that way.
Merman’s Preface
Preface: I have a background in construction. My father owned a construction company with numerous tradesmen: electricians, plumbers, carpenters and painters with numerous ancillary specialists such as welders, concrete workers, landscapers, irrigation specialists, finish carpenters, wood and furniture restoration experts and roofers.
I learned from some of the best. The types of projects we did were adding second stories onto houses, turning 5,000 SF houses into 4-plexes by adding bathrooms, kitchens and sound-proofing walls.
The last big project we worked on together in 2017 was joining two smaller houses into one larger home. The challenge was the homes were built at different elevations, they were perpendicular to each other, and their roof pitches were significantly different. I say this because I learned people want to know your background and perspective.
This article was intended to be short, but quickly became rather long. It is for that reason that I have divided the article into multiple, more manageable parts:
Part 1: The Prepper Toolbox Library
You are building a prepper library, aren’t you? Here’s an article about building a prepper library by Paranoid Prepper if you haven’t. Let’s talk about your prepper toolbox library.
Home Improvement 1-2-3
If you want to be self-reliant, you need some knowledge. Home Depot has an orange hardback book called Home Improvement 1-2-3. It is a GREAT resource that covers almost everything you will encounter in a typical single-family residence. The book has great illustrations, is quite comprehensive and has many helpful hints. It costs $15.

About a month ago my dad brought over his long-time electrician I’ve known and worked with for 25 years and has done most of my electrical work over that time. Dad saw the orange book sitting on my kitchen island, pointed it out to the electrician and said incredulously, “Can you believe MY son has this book!” I just looked at dad and said, “Do YOU remember how to wire a 3-way switch?” He laughed and replied, “No, but I know how to hire someone who does.” Thank you for proving my point, Dad.
This book has what I needed when I need it. Sometimes it doesn’t have the answer to the specific thing I am researching, but it has the information to remind me of the proper vocabulary to guide me in the correct direction.
Building Design and Construction Handbook, Sixth Edition
In case you want more detail, the big brother of Home Improvement 1-2-3 is Building Design and Construction Handbook, Sixth Edition. You can find out more here: https://accessengineeringlibrary.com/browse/building-design-and-construction-handbook-sixth-edition#p2000a1f299701.1001.
Building Construction Handbook
If you want to know more about building construction, I recommend you download this eBook: Building Construction Handbook https://drive.google.com/file/d/1qiNsWKKHWH2Ga2rQfn6wUgYzIbeC7YUh/view. The Building Construction Handbook has just about everything anyone will need to know about balloon frame construction (e.g. house made of sticks and bricks). You can purchase the paperback version of the most recent 11th edition on Amazon for about $45. Yeah, it’s expensive and comprehensive. My dad bought me one similar to this when I was 14. It is the only construction related book he has ever given me. The concepts are VERY important.

Warning
If you actually read this book, you will start looking for walls you can move to impress your friends and family. You will start dreaming about ridiculous home improvement projects like adding a second story to your home. Then you will download SketchUp Make and create hyper detailed drawings of your home and property. Surveyors will be envious of your renderings.
You will spend countless hours watching SketchUp tutorials. Then you will try to justify spending $800 for SketchUp Pro and LayOut. You will then start calculating load bearing ability of different materials as you contemplate cutting a trap door in your floor and constructing a tunnel to your secret bunker in the back yard that you are designing.
Then you will get ticked at your local government for requiring you to get a permit to build your secret bunker which is now not so secret and the government knows you are a prepper and will come to get your guns when they pass mandatory gun buybacks. Then you will spend the next 20 years trying to convince your friends and family to vote Libertarian.
Don’t be that guy. Instead, just invite Merman to be part of your Mutual Aid Group and you get an awesome set of tools and more!
Speed Square Rafter Instruction Manual
If you are in finance, you know how to use a HP-12C. If you are in construction, you have a Rafter Square commonly known as a Speed Square. You know it is an important tool because it can be purchased from $2 – $10, has no moving or removable parts, and comes with a 24 PAGE instruction manual and 25 pages of tables. It’s the tool equivalent of the Pythagorean Theorem. It is remarkably simple, but vitally important so make sure it’s a part of your toolbox library.
Download this manual to your Prepper Library. You will understand why later: http://www.irwin.com/uploads/documents/97_RafterInstructionManual.pdf
For those who are not planning on building to code 🙂 Mike Ohler’s 50.00 and Up underground house book and Earth Sheltered Solar Greenhouse book are quite good. His skills in salvage and repurposing are refreshing when Home Depot is not available. Use a little misdirection and you can build a non-code “Farm Structure” often not taxable or very low tax and retrofit into a hobbit home as needed.
I’ve lived in such a structure in Idaho through the frozen winters and often oddly steamy summers and found them pretty nice. Easy on the firewood and naturally cool in summer. Also I’ve helped more than a few hippies-rednecks build themselves an easy to heat-cool and best of all hide home. Easy to add an extra basement level that is hidden from most inspections. In the medieval era they might have been called Priest Holes.
Misdirection is a valuable skill as not to draw unwanted interest in prepping.
Michael, thank you for introducing me to Mike Oehler. That is an interesting concept. The weight of soil is something that concerns me, but the video I saw of him appears to show a modified balloon frame construction. I didn’t really get a good sense of what part of his structures are underground.
I really do like the idea of building into the side of a hill. That is the second thing I do when I spawn into a Minecraft world 🙂 From a SHTF perspective, the defensive capability of soil is significant.
Mike Ohler’s book is already on my list. I have a buncha tool as I have remodeled my house. Building one is another story. I make my living in the electrical field so those tools I have. Deciding what to add to my prepper’s tool box has most definitely occupied my thoughts. Thanks for the kick in the butt.
Funkengrooven,
I am happy to provide the kick in the rear. I hope you learn some things from the series of articles.
Since you are in the electrical field, may I suggest you write an article about solar power. My research has found it is the most practical, and more expensive, preps I intend to make. Specifically, I intend to create one room of my home into my primary residence in a SHTF situation. It will be isolated complete with a small window A/C unit. I have not figured out the heating yet, but I live in Texas where our average temperature has to be above 50 degrees.
Give it a shot! Otherwise, I will write the article after I explore the various options and install the sucker.
The more expensive part is a significant obstacle at this point. I’ll have some disposable income shortly. Don’t wait for me, write the article.
Fortunately I know some people who have significant experience with solar power. Cost is a big factor for me as well, so that project will have to wait for at least one more year. I would guide anyone to a company called Sol-Ark. I’ve met the electrical engineer in most of their videos. His tests of the effect of an EMP on small electronics were very enlightening. I highly recommend EVERYONE watch them. It will give you great peace of mind. The thing I really like about Sol-Ark is their solar system is specifically designed to withstand an EMP which I see is the most devastating threat I can imagine. He has an EMP generator he tests on various equipment. Take a look at his Faraday cage he tests his equipment (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbHK6Uqmzog). You can build that for <$20 from Home Depot, and that sucker is pretty darn big. I've seen some elaborate Faraday cages, but this man knows how to bust the myths and let you know everything is going to be okay. I have an article on the subject planned, but I'm not ready to spend the money yet. If you are like me, you will watch his videos and say to yourself, "We [the 10% who are preppers or have skills] can survive this thing."
Jerry D. Young discusses tools in many of his stories.
This is a very long list that includes many, though not all, of the tools that people with various types of places and interests might need. No one would need them all, but it is easier for me to just do the big list and let people pick and choose what they might need to fit their situation. Even within a specific type of situation, not everything listed for it would necessarily be needed. I have a tendency to forget things when I am making plans and preparing purchasing lists when I have a bit of money. I use these types of lists to simply remind me of things I might have forgotten since the last time I thought about the subject.
So, please, do not go down the list and get discouraged about the length, thinking you need everything. You do not. Far from it.
Assuming it fits, here is part of my tools list:

Everything is just my opinion.
To have such a well respected author comment on one of my blog posts is interesting. Your list is bigger than mine. Hehe.
This series is intended for an apartment dweller, renter or homeowner who does not currently own a good set of tools. I am shocked how many people have more guns that I do, and fewer tools. I am providing a map of what is minimally required to do virtually anything around a home up to and including building a second story. And, the tool set will take up no more than six square feet of real estate.
When people have limited resources (like me) and they have to make a choice between buying another rifle versus tools (which can become quite expensive), I want to show them exactly what they NEED in order to accomplish virtually any construction related task in a residential environment. Ideally, I expect someone to chime in, “How come a table saw isn’t on the list?” at which point I can reply with another post, “How to Build Your Own Table Saw” which will take up no more than 2″ leaning against the wall behind their toolbox.
At some point in the series I expect to answer some obvious questions such as why I do not feel the need to stock many building materials. With any luck, people will be able to feel optimistic about the possibility of a post TEOTWAWKI society. I’m trying to give unskilled people a map that, God willing, will lead to hope and faith in themselves. At the end of the series, I want the reader to say to themselves, “Wow, I can really do this.” Until then, hopefully readers, when walking through a big box retailer, will stroll to the hardware aisle, see something they don’t have, remember reading that Merman said they needed one (even if they don’t know how to use it at the moment), and buy it. In a post TEOTWAWKI situation when people are scavenging for resources, I want the reader to remember Merman said I needed one of these and take it home with them.
There are some more projects I will undertake around my home, and I hope to be able to demonstrate how to do some of this stuff, too.
