Here’s what I would like you to do. First, turn your speaker volume down, the following recording is LOUD… yes, it’s the ‘tranquil night sounds of the country’ but trust me, it is really loud.
Next, I’d like you to press play, close your eyes, sit back and listen for a while…
You back? You with me? You’ve heard the night sounds of the country?
OK
Likely one of two things have happened, either the sounds of the night at The Place have lulled you to sleep, or they have creeped you out.
If it’s the former, then I’m glad I helped you have a nice quick nap.
If it’s the later, then read on.
The country is loud at night in the summer
These are the night sounds of the country in the Midwest in the spring. Nature is not quiet, it’s not tranquil, it gets really noisy and loud out in the hinterlands, and things most definitely go bump in the night.
Where The Place is there are no lights of any kind in view in the summer, if the moon isn’t up, it is pitch black. The world is lit, what little illumination that there is, by starshine (and yes, this is a real thing, there is starshine if you are out in the boonies far enough).

What’s my point? If we get an EMP, if we have a huge grid-down situation, this is what the night sounds of your neighborhood is going to be like… until the gunfire starts…
You should Know Your Place and what it sounds like, what is natural and what isn’t.
The entire point of this post is simply to get you to stop and think for a minute, your suburb may someday sound just like this, except with the occasional (or not so occasional) gunshot sound. Are you ready? Just some grist for your mental mill.
