As preppers, most of have a pretty clear reason to own a gun/guns, and those reasons seem obvious to us.
The vast majority of people in the USA, however, are not preppers, so I always find it interesting when people talk about their choice of firearms ownership, and the reasoning behind why they chose to be armed.
We are non-political, but…
Here at Beans, Bullets, Bandages & You we make no bones about the fact that we are almost 100-percent non-political and non-partisan. We only have one exception… we are pro second amendment.
We do, however, recognize that there are political forces in this world that want to eliminate the second amendment entirely, or make it at least very difficult to own firearms (think California, New Jersey, Hawai’i) and virtually impossible to carry them.
Every person who arms themselves is an ally of those wanting to keep the second amendment around and functional going forward, even if we don’t all agree on all the aspects of gun laws (or even if we should have any gun laws at all).

The Reason She Owns A Gun
I came across a great article on a blog (one that has nothing to do with prepping, but rather contains a lot of really killer recipes… Salty loves cooking) via a social media contact, and found this article (CLICK HERE) about why the author chose to arm herself.
I contacted her and asked if I could use some experts and present them here, which she graciously approved.
My thinking is not just that she has an interesting take, but also I know a lot of people reading this are having trouble getting spouses, family members or other friends and loved ones on board with the concept of gun ownership.
Seeing what she has to say about it may give you some perspective to find fresh ways to discuss guns and firearms ownership in your own lives.
I personally don’t agree with all of her views on laws, but I think it’s important to understand what they are because they are coming from a woman who chose to arm herself to protect herself and her family… not a “gun grabber.”
She is in favor of background checks being expanded, and I’m not including that information here because it’s outside the focus of this article. Be sure to read her entire post on her site to get her perspective
Mira’s Story In Her Own Words
Excerpts from her article…
I have a gun. Yes, this 29 year old female has a concealed pistol license and often enough when I go out in public by myself or even go for a measly walk around the neighborhood by myself with my kids I carry my weapon.
But why you might wonder?
Because I feel safer knowing that I can protect myself and my family if worse case scenario occurs and I have too.
Let me start off by addressing something you may be wondering – I do not condone what is happening in this world and in our country with kids and adults getting access to weapons and using them for horrible, horrible things. I will also point out, that the laws that have passed recently, especially in my home state of Washington, are pretty crappy and not well thought out ones. They aren’t going to stop nor prevent shootings unfortunately and let me tell you why.
Criminals, bad guys, people that might not have all two cents up there will still get them. They will still use them and things will still happen. That’s the ugly truth.
It’s a crappy world we live in that we fear walking our children outside by ourselves. It’s a sad place when I go to the mall and fear takes over and I get anxious and want to leave. But at least I know that if worse case scenario happens, I have a chance to help.
That is why I carry
I had commented on a FB post recently which was a video of a mom who had lost her son to the recent attack in California. She was hurt, she was passionate, my heart ached for her. She said in the video “I WANT NO MORE GUNS” and my response was that I don’t believe that to be the answer. I posted that on the video and of course people ripped into it, because we are all passionate about our beliefs and I respect that.
My right to bear arms isn’t the issue here. Frankly, if there was no guns ever created in the whole wide world and no one had a chance of getting or making one, then fine, I’d be totally fine with that. However, that is not the world we live in. I feel safer having one. I feel safer knowing that if I’m walking on a trail with the kids and someone attacks me, I have my pepper spray and also my gun.
The Area She’s From
Now, you may not be familiar with the area I am from, and some parts of the town are super clean and awesome. Other towns nearby are not. Downtown Seattle is not clean and not taken care of.
Everett, WA is also garbage these days. There are SO many homeless, drug addicts AND gangs in this area now that it’s crazy unsafe. My husband tells me stories of the druggies and homeless he see’s every day walking like zombies around that area.
I avoid the area if I can and definitely carry when I go over there which is only 10 minutes from where I live. It’s literally across the bridge from where we live. Scary, huh! Obviously, not all of WA is like that and there are clean an nice cities as well but if a drug induced jerk comes after me and the pepper spray (people who are anti gun recommend I carry) doesn’t work and the guy still comes after me, what can I do then? Take it? No, thanks.
I think the major issue we have in this country is that it’s easy for criminals to get guns. It’s easy to people with a mental illness to get one and it’s also easy to get drugs. I think our biggest problem here is the drugs that we have on our streets. The drugs taking over the lives of our youth and children and how people are ignoring these things and focusing on other things that the media screams over.
The Media Owns Us
The media literally tells us what to think, when to think it and why we are thinking it. If you don’t believe me, turn off the TV, your social media, and anything else that you use for coverage and go walk around downtown and see what is going on on your own streets. Now, can we fix this? Yes. Will it be easy? No.
Now all of this is my opinion and it’s definitely a hot topic that people get very fired up discussing. We either have our gun advocates or the anti gun folks. Each have valid points to be fair.
I will end this with one last comment. We all deserve to live. We all deserve to make our own choices and have a way to protect ourselves and our families. It might not be the way that you would do it, or maybe it would be, but either way, we need to respect each other and focus on where the issue really lies. How do we stop the mentally ill from accessing firearms and using them for destruction without causing the law abiding citizen to suffer.
Salty’s Conclusion
Mira nails it in the last paragraph.
We all deserve to live.
We all deserve to make our own choices and have a way to protect ourselves and our families.
That’s good enough for me.

With the reference to Mother in Cal.. No More Guns, what if her son was killed by a Car? would she be saying no more cars? what if it was a Airplane? no more airplanes? baseball bat? knife? The list goes on and on.. But one thing that always gets the ban btn is firearms…
Does anybody else find it kind of sad that the 2nd Amendment is now a political issue? “Shall not be infringed” is some pretty clear language.
When a surgeon makes a wrong incision, nobody blames the scalpel…
