Guns, ammo and durable goods that are not likely to lose relative value over the years make a good investment for somebody who’s a prepper.
Investment in prepping?
I’m not an MBA, nor do I play one on the internet. I’m not a financial advisor, nor am I in any way a money manager… but I do make investments. I have the usual, 401K through work, Roth IRA’s, that kind of stuff, but in addition to retirement & monetary wealth growth I also invest in durable tangible goods that have a great chance of at least keeping up with inflation, and that are not tied directly to any currency.
Probably our biggest investments are our house in town and “The Place”. It’s hard to beat paid-for real estate as a tangible asset. I’m going to be up front and say we live 100 percent debt free, and have for years. We pay cash (or barter) up front. If we can’t drop the cash on it, we can’t afford it. To us, “afford” means pull out the wallet (or trade merchandise) and drop the money on the table.

My “shooter” mosin
Cash is king, at least for now…
Often, cash allows you to get better deals. We offered the man we bought “The Place” $350 an acre less than his “bottom price” with the caveat that we had the money sitting in the bank, and could close as soon as he could make the appointment.
The time we made the deal until the closing took 4 days, and the biggest part of that wait had to do with the speed that the title insurance company operated at (fortunately they had done the previous work on “The Place” so it didn’t take long.
Magazines? I stocked up
Since I am a gun nut, a lot of my “durable tangible wealth” is in ammunition, magazines and guns. Following Sandy Hook, after AR magazines finally came back down, I decided to buy some as an investment. A place on the internet (one that I had used before) had Gen 2 30 round PMAG’s for $5 each if you bought 100… so… I did.
I put them away in a climate-controlled room in an air sealed case where they should last indefinitely.
I also bought 20 Hex head Mosins in very good surplus condition for $79 each a few years ago. Current sale price? $350 and up. Russian Mosin sniper rifles, all actual snipers and not converted? I paid $295. Today? $950 if you can find one.
I am concentrating on the stuff that is most likely to A) shoot up in price or B) get banned (anything AR/AK related is going to get banned again sooner or later).
The next idiot that shoots up a school (which I hope NEVER happens, but we all know some idiot nutjob will sooner or later) and kills a lot of kids with an AR may well finish us off… if nothing else, the scare sure will drive prices/availability through the roof.
I am concentrating on good quality magazines, Magpul and some metals (Brownell’s with anti-tilt followers).
There are many, many other things we “invest” in, I just wanted to share the idea.
