Kindergarten Emergency Kit
By Becca
I made an emergency kit for my daughter’s kindergarten classroom, with her teacher’s permission. The way it is set up, everything is packed into the 3 gallon bucket, and the bucket can be converted into a toilet.
The kit can be used during a long lockdown or if there were another emergency which necessitated the kids staying at school longer than usual. If they are confined to the classroom during lockdown, there is no accessible bathroom. I wouldn’t want to be locked in a classroom with 15 kindergarteners who all have to pee!
The Kindergarten Kit Concept
The way it works is, when needed, teacher grabs the bucket. Pop the top off and all the supplies are bagged so that she can remove the contents by removing the bag. Flashlights are the very first thing in the top, so that they can be found by feel. Then trash bags, a dollar store shower curtain and duct tape.
The teacher removes the bag of stuff, tapes the shower curtain across a corner of the room, puts a trash bag in the bucket as a liner, snaps the lid back on and it becomes a toilet. The garbage bag liner can be removed and tied shut if it becomes too full/stinky, and another liner put in.
Other items in the kit are: toilet paper, disinfectant wipes, 20+ garbage bags which can double as ponchos, alcohol wipes, baby wipes, hand sanitizer, hand/foot warmers, emergency blankets, first aid kit, glow stick necklace/bracelets, extra flashlight batteries, snack bars, zip ties, instant coffee packets for the teacher, gum and more. I’m thinking about adding a few more items like a pack each of boys/girls underwear. There is a case of water bottles that goes with it as well.

The following printed directions are secured to the bucket:
To Use as Toilet:
Remove lid. Remove bag of supplies from bucket. Line bucket with trash bag, replace lid. Unfold shower curtain and use duct tape or zip ties to hang shower curtain across an area/corner. Place bucket behind shower curtain. When child is finished, use hand sanitizer for hands, wipe toilet seat with disinfectant wipe if necessary. Remove bag, tie shut and replace with fresh bag as needed. Lining bottom of bag with paper towels will help soak up liquids to make changing bag easier.
Trash bags may also be used as emergency ponchos.
For warmth, wrap child in emergency blanket and use small piece of duct tape to secure, cut or tear hole in bottom of garbage bags for child’s head, then slip over child so that their head is all the way through the hole, bottom of bag is seated over shoulders and top of bag hangs down.
First Things First
The teacher wanted me to highlight the importance of the instant coffee

The Shopping Breakdown:
From Dollar Tree, i got:
Coffee singles (5 packet box)
Shower curtain
Duct tape
Glow sticks, each package has 6 or 8 for $1
Box of assorted band-aids
Antibiotic ointment
Hand sanitizer
Baby wipes
2 tarps
Garbage bags (2 boxes of 13 I believe)
Gauze rolls
Pretzel dippers
Gum
Flashlights and batteries came from Family Dollar; I originally planned to get a better brand just to make sure they would work right but I ran out of time and made sure I at least put in name brand batteries.
The medical supplies came from my own supplies at home but obviously those are easily purchased on Amazon or most stores.
I bought both boxes of Clif bars at Wal-Mart but it’s this 18 count. I’m almost certain I paid much less than this… probably more like $12 or $13.
The actual emergency blankets I bought, and i got 2 packs for 20 total here.
With the alcohol swabs, I actually have these auto shipped just to keep a good supply because they are fantastic for disinfecting found supplies along the way. If you grab a firearm from someone who no longer needs it, you prob don’t want whatever their hands have been touching to be on your hands. Also, there’s after bathroom visits on the trail or camping or SHTF bug out scenario

Making It Fit
I took a lot of it out of the original boxes: the band-aids, ointment, garbage bags, coffee singles, flashlights etc. all came in boxes or some sort of packaging and I removed that and put them in zip-lock bags to save space to make it fit.

I’m going to actually bring her a backpack to put the food items and first aid items in as well. The boxes of bars do not fit in the bucket with the other stuff.
Salty’s Note: Thanks to Becca for putting this kit together and sharing it with her child’s classroom, and thanks also to helping us share this information. This kind of project is not only extremely helpful for any kindergarten students caught in a bad situation, but it’s also a great example of how we can be proactive in our prepping. Also note, we don’t have any affiliation with any vendor linked here, they are just provided for your information and convenience.
Not enough TP. With a bunch of scared, nervous little ones…you’re going to need a whole lot more.
You’re right, it’s not. I’m the mom who created this kit. There is only so much room in the bucket and each classroom does have a sink and paper towel dispenser. It was just not possible to put more rolls in the bucket so the teacher would have to have a couple more on hand. The bucket is really meant to be the thing to grab while you figure out what you need to do next, but with the ability to use many of the supplies a little bit longer term. A bucket with a small roll of tp and baby wipes is better than no bathroom at all!
Thank you! That’s genius and very functional. I will do the same for my child’s class.
This is seriously awesome!
Awesome idea. Great job!!!
