Today’s review is about Augason Farms Super Nutty Granola in the #10 can.
Overview of the Augason Farms Super Nutty Granola:
Augason Farms Super Nutty Granola is mostly oats, nicely toasted in vegetable oil and sweetened. Some tree nuts (almonds, walnuts, cashews) and seeds (sesame, sunflower). There are a few spices to improve flavor, none obtrusive. It’s a pretty generic but perfectly acceptable granola.
Pros:
At 24 ½ cup servings to the can, it’s a lot of food in a small space. Augason Farms Super Nutty Granola needs no cooking.
It’s also good with milk or (my favorite) layered into a yogurt parfait with fruit (rehydrated or canned fruit works if fresh isn’t available). Augason Farms Super Nutty Granola is a whole grain food, so it doesn’t tend to block up the digestive tract as MREs are famous for doing. The flavor’s nice (but not amazing) and the texture is good. I expect it will stay good for many months even after opening due to lack of moisture to promote storage.
Cons:
I wouldn’t call the Augason Farms Super Nutty Granola ‘super nutty’. Oats are definitely the main story here.
Like most commercial granolas, Augason Farms Super Nutty Granola is heavy on added oil and sugar (bringing it to 250 calories for a half cup). That’s not so much of a downside in a storage food where you want a lot of calories in a small space, but it made it oversweet for my taste.
Pro tip:
Don’t bother mixing it to see if the nuts have settled to the bottom. Mine hadn’t, and I probably decreased the shelf life by mixing it (thereby oxygenating it) to check.
