Review: Peep sight for 91/30 Mosin Nagant rifles by Anacortes Prototypes

Ever wish your Mosin had a peep sight? One of the biggest challenges for preppers who own Mosin Nagant rifles is their optics, or lack thereof. Mosins are notoriously difficult and expensive to put optics on, especially if one wishes to keep the historical value of the gun intact.

Of course, owners can just shoot the guns “open sight” but, as any Mosin owner knows, that’s not really a very good option either. Mosins “shoot high”, even the lowest position generally overshoots by 6-10 inches at 100 yards. Additionally, stock sights are difficult to see.

The peep sight:

I found a solution in a product by Anacortes Prototypes, the peep sight for 91/30 Mosin Nagant rifle. NOTE DECEMBER 4, 2019: At some point in time, the website became unavailable. I will monitor to see if it comes back alive again.

Note: We have no sponsors for this website, all reviews are of products we have purchased with our own cash.

Purchase:

Bought on their website for $32.99 plus shipping. Item came about a week after I ordered it.

Installation:

Was a bit of a pain, but not too horrible. There are youtube videos out there which show you how to remove and put a new/different sight on a Mosin, so give them a watch before you do it. Basically, all you have to do is drive ou the one pin holding the old sight in, put this one in place with a clamp, and then replace the pin. Good news is that you can keep the old parts, and make it original again at any time you choose.

Shooting:

The sight comes with two peep sizes, I chose the larger one and sighting in was a breeze. it has both windage and elevation adjustments.

Fit and finish:

Mine looks really good, quality machine work, the finish fits the gun now. Looks like an original part.

Above, mounted on a 1938 Tula

I like these well enough that I have put them on the several mosins that I have that are shooters. Below you can see my ‘fancy rig’ where a Tula is wearing a Archangel Stock and a muzzle break.

The Bottom Line:

Thumbs Up!

  1. thanks for the review. How much did your shots tighten up after installing?

    • On my best shooting gun, I went from a 6-inch group to about a 3-inch group at 100 yards, and importantly I was able to center the point of aim instead of making my point of aim about 6 inches low with the stock sights.

    • Thank you Daniel, I’ve made a note in the article reflecting this!

I’ll try to find out if they are out of business.
